Must-see Artworks
MoMA is home to some of the most iconic works in modern and contemporary art history. The essential highlights include The Starry Night by Vincent van Gogh, which captures an expressive emotional landscape, and Water Lilies by Claude Monet, offering a serene and immersive experience. Another pivotal masterpiece is Self-Portrait with Two Flowers in Her Raised Left Hand by Paula Modersohn-Becker, a pioneering work of the German avant-garde.
While exploring, don't miss other landmark pieces such as the revolutionary Les Demoiselles d’Avignon by Pablo Picasso or the iconic Campbell’s Soup Cans by Andy Warhol. These works, along with masterpieces like Frida Kahlo's Self-Portrait with Cropped Hair and Jackson Pollock's One Number 31, 1950, span the museum’s dynamic galleries, offering an unparalleled journey through the evolution of modern creativity.

Vincent van Gogh
Created in mid-June 1889 at the Saint-Paul asylum in Saint-Rémy, this mid-scale oil painting is a masterful blend of direct observation and imagination. The turbulent sky, dominated by a crescent moon and Venus, sits above a quiet village with a Dutch-style church steeple. Using thick paint and expressive brushstrokes, van Gogh assigned an emotional language to nature, creating a bridge between the physical world and his internal feelings.

Paula Modersohn-Becker
In this emblematic self-portrait painted the year of her death, a pregnant Paula Modersohn-Becker stares at the viewer with a steady, compelling gaze. Holding two flowers as symbols of fertility, she upends traditional standards of femininity. As a pioneering figure of the 20th-century German avant-garde, she is believed to be the first modern woman artist to paint herself nude and pregnant.

Historical Overview
The Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) was created in 1929 by Lillie P. Bliss, Mary Quinn Sullivan, and Abby Aldrich Rockefeller, along with additional original trustees A. Conger Goodyear, Paul Sachs, Frank Crowninshield, and Josephine Boardman Crane. Established to challenge conservative policies of traditional museums, it focused exclusively on modern art under its founding director, Alfred H. Barr, Jr. Barr envisioned a multi-departmental structure that today includes architecture and design, drawings and prints, film, media and performance, painting and sculpture, and photography. The collection has grown from an initial gift of eight prints and one drawing to approximately 200,000 paintings, sculptures, and other works, plus two million film stills. Following major expansions designed by Philip Johnson, Cesar Pelli, and Yoshio Taniguchi, the museum now features 630,000 square feet of space and maintains a partnership with MoMA PS1 to explore the art, ideas, and issues of our time.
