Almond Blossom

Vincent van Gogh painted these large almond blossom branches against a blue sky, a subject he particularly favored. Since almond trees bloom early in spring, he regarded them as a symbol of new life. In this work, he adopted the bold outlines, the specific subject matter, and the composition of the tree within the picture plane from Japanese printmaking. Painted in Saint-Rémy-de-Provence, this piece was a gift for his brother Theo and sister-in-law Jo to celebrate the birth of their son, Vincent Willem. It remained deeply cherished by the Van Gogh family, and Vincent Willem later founded the Van Gogh Museum.
